Habitat Build First Day Pictures

Posted on September 18, 2010 at 12:12pm. No Comments

Here’s a few pictures from the first build day.  Thanks to everyone that came out today!

I also want to thank Andrew from the Starbucks at Providence Commons.  I stopped by very early this morning to grab some coffee on my way to the Habitat build site.  He took the time to ask about me and what I was doing so early on a Saturday morning.  He then did something that surprised me.  He wouldn’t let me pay for my coffee.  He simply thanked me and said “Thanks for serving.”  Thank you Andrew for your early morning kindness and generosity.

God Bless,
RJ

Helping Families in Charlotte

Outreach Opportunity:

Get involved in the upcoming homeless shelter week, October 3-10 as we partner with Family Promise of Charlotte!  Join the growing group of volunteers at Church at Charlotte to provide food and housing to homeless families right here in our own community.  Volunteer opportunities range from providing a meal to serving as an evening OR overnight host at the church facility.

To receive more information, please contact Julie Deuink .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or Lynn Pitts .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

I also think it was timely that my wife came across this article, Number of Families in Shelters Rises, in the NY Times this morning.

Here’s an excerpt from the article that I think you will find interesting.  You can read the entire article by clicking here.

The Griffith family moved from Rhode Island to Florida two years ago after Mr. Griffith, who was working as a waiter at an Applebee’s restaurant, asked to be transferred to one opening in Spring Hill, an hour north of Tampa, where he figured the cost of living would be lower.

He did well at first, earning as much as $25 an hour, including tips. He also got a job as a line cook at another restaurant, where he made $12 an hour.

The family eventually moved into a three-bedroom condominium and lived the typical suburban life, with a sport-utility vehicle and a minivan to cart around their growing family.

In January, however, the restaurant where Mr. Griffith was cooking closed. Then his hours began drying up at Applebee’s. The couple had savings, but squandered some of it figuring he would quickly find another job. When he did not, they were evicted from their condo.

Coffee and ServeGlobal

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 9:15am. No Comments

If you have recently started visiting CAC and stopped by the information booth for your free gift you should have received, along with Pastor Kallam’s book, a burlap bag filled with fair-trade (I’ll post another day on the benefits of fair-trade coffee) Ethiopian coffee.  The coffee comes from a great company called Give Half Cafe.

The founders of the company give half of all profits to initiatives in Ethiopia including funding wells with Water is Life International.  Water is Life is also one of our key Ethiopian partners!  The burlap bags are handmade by women in Ethiopia who are connected with a ministry called Women at Risk.  The burlap bags provide an income for these women.

The good news is you don’t have to be new to CAC to join with Give Half Cafe!  You can simply buy coffee from their web site and by doing so support the work of ServeGlobal in Ethiopia!  Even better, put “Charlotte” in the box for promotional code and receive 5% off your order.

Coffee and ServeGlobal: A great combination.
