“Get Your Paper”

Posted on March 25, 2009 at 6:36am.

There is hardly a morning that I don’t read the paper. I read the sports section, local and state and the front page and national news. I read it to stay informed. I keep hoping that something will be there indicating that the difficult times will come to an end and people will find jobs. As important as the paper is it shouldn’t be the first thing I read and it won’t be the most significant reading I do. For me those words are found in the Bible. Listen to the Psalmist - “Your word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God speaks words to us that will last for all time and those words will give insight and direction to daily living. I probably won’t stop reading the paper but will never be the firsts or last word I read.

Stuff

“What can I live without?”  It is an interesting question and not one we often ask ourselves.  The question is usually, “What do I need?”  I have begun asking the first question a little more frequently these days.  I will be honest - I have so much stuff!  Truth is we all do. Just like my closets, my life can get crowded with stuff.  Cleaning out my closets is fairly simple, simplifying my life is a whole lot more challenging.  As I continue to seek to do that - I wonder what I can live without.

Just Another Monday

Monday and the start of another week. Do you ever feel like the days roll into weeks and then into months - with it all being the same old same old? There are many times when I know that is exactly how I feel. I long for God to act in some dramatic way, you know stir life up so I can see him working. Then I realize it is in the everyday, the routine that he so often shows himself faithful. I want exciting - he wants faithful.

Finding Hope

Posted on March 22, 2009 at 6:56am.

Sometimes I wonder where hope is found. I know the right answer but the hope of heaven doesn’t pay the bills or answer what the next job will be for someone desperately looking for work. In so many ways my hope rests in the two appearances of Jesus. With his first coming he secured my salvation and with his second appearing heaven for all of eternity will be mine. It is the gap in-between that causes me sleepless nights and confusion. What do you say to the person who is out of work and trying to keep their head above water - hang in there until heaven? I think I will have to ponder this and wrestle with God hoping it becomes clearer.

Bad Picks

Good thing I don’t make my living as a prophet. My picks in the NCAA basketball tourney are not real good. In fact I rank near the bottom for those participating in the church group. In a silly way it is a great reminder that none of us are very good at predicting the future. That is why it makes sense to trust someone who holds the past, present and future secure.
