Stirred By The Scriptures

Simple

Trusting God is a simple concept - simply hard.  While we might all agree that God loves us (seen in the sending of his Son for us) the expression of that love leaves me shaking my head at times.  Lately it involves the timing of his answer or lack thereof to prayer.  It isn’t prayer for myself but requests I lay before him on behalf of others.  I don’t understand his ways and that creates a tension in my trusting him.  I know there are no easy answers, well they are but when offered they seem trite. So I struggle on, hopefully in good ways, believing that simplicity on the other side of struggle will lead to simply trusting Him.

Open Eyes

“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.”  Those are the words of Psalm 119:18, the desire of the psalmist’s heart. Open eyes in order to understand life the way that God designed it.  When God handed down the law it was to guide his people in how to live and to point them to Christ.  As we reflect on this it should be our desire as we come to God’s Word that our eyes would be open to how God has shaped us to live for him.  It really is a wonderful life.

Memorial Day

I hope you can enjoy the day today. For many this is a day off from work. As you and I enjoy the day I hope we will remember all of those who have gone before us and served our nation to fight for and preserve the way of life we all enjoy.

Rejoice

The final words in Habakkuk are some of the most stirring in all of God’s Word.  They describe the realities of life with the triumph of a man who knows where real joy is found.

“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor the fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stall, YET WILL I REJOICE IN THE LORD, I WILL TAKE JOY IN THE GOD OF MY SALVATION.”

Lord may that be the prayer that comes from my lips and may I find my joy in you alone.

Two More Realities

God goes on in his answer to Habakkuk to remind him of two more things.  First that he needs to BELIEVE IN GOD’S PLAN.  In verse 14 he says there is coming a day when “the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord.”  Our hope is always tied to the future and the Lord’s return.  Second God tells Habakkuk to BE WITH HIM.  Verse 20 is a powerful picture of God being in his temple and the world standing in silence before him.  What would it look like for you and me to slow down and spend time with God?
