Well God answers Habakkuk’s second complaint, sort of. He doesn’t answer him directly but what he tells him are three very important things when it comes to walking with God. First is found in 2:4. God calls Habakkuk and us to TRUST HIM. We are not to live “puffed up” but by faith. It is a wonderful but scary place when we come to realize we have nothing to trust but God. I tend to fill my life with all the things that allow me to cope with life and never have to turn to the Lord. He simply wants us to trust him.

Habakkuk tries to make sense of God and his ways. In verses 12 and 13 he responds first by reminding God of his attributes. God is everlasting, he is a Rock, he is pure and he is holy. So why God are you doing this? This makes no sense at all. Habakkuk lodges his complaint and then says he will wait for God’s answer. Have you ever felt like the path God has taken you down make no sense? That somehow God got it wrong with your life? Chapter two will address how God answers Habakkuk and we might find some answers for ourselves.

Well God answers Habakkuk, does he ever. “Look at the nations and watch - and be utterly amazed.” OK God I’m watching. “For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe even if you were told.” I can’t wait God, this is going to be wonderful. I have to believe that what God said next stunned Habakkuk in disbelief. “I am raising up the Babylonians, that ruthless and impetuous people, who sweep across the whole earth to seize dwelling places not their own.” Ever say this to God -“This isn’t exactly the answer I was looking for.” It is a reminder to me that our God will not be controled by our ways.

Listen to Habakkuk’s opening cry to God. “How long, O Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save? You get the picture life isn’t going to well for Habakkuk and the Children of Israel. He goes on with his long list of complaints: injustice, violence, strife and conflict. The law he says has become paralyzed - life isn’t working. In his cry you hear this theme - I JUST CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE! Maybe you can identify, life is overwhelming and God doesn’t seem to be doing anything about it. So we beg God to enter in to the battle. We want him to step into life and fix the problem. Well God does answer Habakkuk but his answer might surprise you - see you tomorrow.

I was in some meetings recently and the man who shared a devotional did so from the Book of Habakkuk. Where or what is that you ask? It is a short, three chapter book, tucked in towards the end of the Old Testament. Habakkuk prophesied during the same time as Jeremiah and sought to understand what God was doing. Have you ever wondered what God is doing or even not doing? Over the next several days we will look and see how God and Habakkuk wrestled with that. We just might gain some insight for ourselves.
