Shine On

Jesus said we are to be light in darkness. Those exact thoughts were also said of him. “The light shines in darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” (John 1:5) We are to live in a manner that will probably be misunderstood - sound appealing? It is so easy to be surprised when people react negatively to the truth Christ offers but it is what we should expect or at least believe is possible. Still we are to live out the truth of his light in all of our activities. So go, let your light shine.

Simple

It is hard to believe that the life of following Christ can be as simple as - trust and obey. Yet that is where I seem to end up. Trusting God with my future and the unknown is all I am able to run to. The other option is to fall back on my own strategies, which many times produce short term gains and then in the long run come up empty. Obeying God is admitting that as the designer of life his ways are truly the best. “Lord help me to live in that way.

Powerful

I sat this week and listened to someone as they told me their story. It was a story of forgiveness, asked for and given. If you had been there and heard the details you would have said it wasn’t possible. Humanly speaking you would have been right. But this story was about the work of God in someones heart - the power of the cross. When God redeems a person it makes possible choices that go beyond logic and even justice. The choices we can make include mercy and grace all because of what Jesus did on the cross. When the Spirit is working that kind of power in the human heart the possibilities are endless.

Hope

As you begin your day today, here are some words given by the apostle Paul that I believe will bring encouragement. “...we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” (Romans 5:3-5) Today you are a recipient of God’s love in Christ secured by the Spirit - take heart, have hope.

Up Early

I am up early today to open God’s Word and study together with sixty some guys.  I am excited about what God will do.  You know it doesn’t have to be at an early hour nor does it need to be in a group - large or small.  I hope that you will spend time opening your Bible today.  It is God’s revelation to us about himself (first and foremost) and about life, the way he has designed for us to live.  Of all the important things you will read none will be as life changing as his Word.
