What Benefits

Posted on June 22, 2010 at 5:56am.

When we join something one of the questions we usually have is - “What are the benefits?” We want to know what joining will provide for us. King David gives us some insight to that as it relates to following God, in Psalm 103.

“Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits -
who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

I want to encourage you to meditate on his benefits today.

Final Say So

“Mortals make elaborate plans,
but God has the last word.”
(Proverbs 16:1 - The Message)

We love to be in control and plan life to the fullest. The truth we struggle with is that we are not the final word. When I was growing up my buddies and I would spend hours planning our weekends and what we were going to do. We were going to head to New York City, take the subway to Yankee stadium and after the game ... It was great but there was only one problem - we didn’t have the last word. That role belonged to our dads, who many times had other ideas. I can make all the plans I want but I must also yield to the one who has final say so - my heavenly Father.

Lasting

“But my salvation will last forever,
my righteousness will never fail.”

Isaiah reminds us that in the midst of an ever changing world the Lord remains a constant. There is hope and encouragement for us as we find a rock to anchor our souls and our lives to. We can be fooled into thinking that life will offer what we need when the truth is it is always been, it will only be God himself.

Gospel Living

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel…” Those are the powerful words of the Apostle Paul. The thought that I am living out the gospel of Jesus Christ. To not be ashamed of the gospel certainly has application to standing up for truth and what I believe in a world that seeks to deny the claims of Christ, but it also means more than that. Gospel living also means that my life and all the decisions I make are in keeping with and in the strength of what Christ has done for me. I live in the power of sins (daily) forgiven. I walk in the reality of the cross and a risen savior. With that in mind i go out to live today.

Never

Listen to the words of the prophet Isaiah:

“Can a mother forget the infant at her breast, walk away from the baby she bore? But even if mothers forget, I’d never forget you - never. Look I’ve written your names on the backs of my hands.”

The powerful picture of God’s promise to be with us always and to remember us in all of life. Just another great reminder that he will never leave us or forsake (or forget) us. Can you rest in that promise today, no matter what the day may hold?
