We’ve highlighted the ministry Church at Charlotte has at Idlewild Elementary in past blog posts. Here is another story from Ellen Freitas, who would have called herself an unlikely ESL Tutor:
A year after joining CAC, I completed a “Getting Involved” form on the church website detailing my administrative skills and noting that due to my lack of experience with children, I would be of no use in any area involving children. For the past fifteen months I’ve been blessed to put my administrative skills to use in the Worship Ministry each week.
Last spring I mentioned to a friend that I was looking for an additional opportunity to serve in a ministry outside the church. I forgot to mention “no children, please.” My friend suggested the ESL Tutoring Program at Idlewild Elementary School.
My first thought was, “I can’t do that!” But—to my great surprise—I said yes. I felt God urging me out of my comfort zone. Since September of 2016, I’ve met twice a week with a precious nine-year-old from Nepal. God has provided me with all the inspiration and guidance I’ve needed to minister to this child. We are both very much at ease and have even managed to have a few laughs while we read. My two hours a week with Sandesh are heartwarming and healing. I am awed by God’s love and faithfulness.
Ellen is one of our many volunteers serving as an ESL Tutor for students at Idlewild Elementary School. Even so, there are many students who still need someone to meet with on a regular basis. Perhaps, like Ellen, you have never worked with children before. And perhaps, like Ellen, you may find a sweet friendship with a child who is learning English as their second language.
If you are interested in learning more about our tutoring program at Idlewild Elementary School, please contact Andrea Howell. We have many support services available to our volunteer tutors. In addition to initial training with experienced educators, and encouragement from our Outreach staff and your fellow volunteers, we also have ongoing trainings and resources available to you.
We hope you will contact us to learn more about serving the children of our city.
